Insights on pricing, marketing, hospitality, and the business behind transformational retreats. By Leni Cavazos.

Many retreat leaders believe that what fills a retreat is the offer.
The location.
The itinerary.
The transformation.
But what actually determines whether someone says yes is something far less tangible—and far more powerful:
Authenticity.
Not the curated version.
Not the polished version.
But the real, human version of you.
Because at the end of the day, people are not choosing your retreat based on perfection. They are choosing based on connection.
And connection only happens when something real is present.
Most people believe they are being authentic.
But in reality, much of what we present—especially in business—is shaped by:
what we think others expect
what we believe will be accepted
what will prevent judgment
This creates a subtle but powerful disconnect.
Instead of showing up as who we are, we show up as who we think we need to be.
And this has a cost.
When you are constantly filtering yourself, adjusting your behavior, or trying to meet expectations, it requires energy. A lot of it.
It’s the energy of:
overthinking what to say
managing how you're perceived
trying to “get it right”
And that energy is felt by others.
Because even if your words sound right, your presence doesn fully land.
Connection does not come from saying the perfect thing.
It comes from saying the true thing.
When someone is being authentic, even in a simple moment, it creates space for others to do the same.
A simple example:
You’re invited somewhere. You’re exhausted.
Most people will either:
show up anyway (resentful and drained), or
make an excuse that isn’t true
Both options break connection.
But authenticity sounds like:
“I would love to be there. I care about you. And I’m exhausted—I can’t show up as my best self today.”
This kind of communication does two things:
It honors the relationship
It honors yourself
And more importantly, it invites the other person into real connection, not performance.
This is the same principle that applies inside your business.
There is a direct relationship between who you are being and who you attract.
If you are showing up in a way that is not fully aligned with who you are, you are likely attracting:
clients who don’t fully understand your work
people who are not aligned with your values
shallow engagement instead of real commitment
Because people are responding to the version of you that you are presenting.
Not the real one.
But when you show up authentically, something shifts.
You start attracting:
people who resonate deeply
clients who feel safe with you
participants who are ready for real transformation
Because authenticity creates a different kind of signal.
One of the biggest reasons people avoid authenticity is fear of judgment.
But what’s often overlooked is that external judgment usually mirrors internal judgment.
When you are harsh with yourself—judging your decisions, your productivity, your worth—you are more likely to:
assume others are judging you
try to prove yourself
overperform to be accepted
And that creates a cycle.
You push yourself harder.
You expect more from others.
You feel frustrated when they don’t meet that standard.
Breaking this cycle doesn’t start with others.
It starts with how you relate to yourself.
When you allow yourself to:
rest without guilt
say no without justification
not have everything figured out
You begin to create space—for yourself and for others.
In today’s online world, it’s easy to believe that success comes from perfection.
Perfect branding.
Perfect messaging.
Perfect results.
But the truth is, that kind of perfection creates distance, not trust.
When people only see one side of you—the polished, successful version—they don’t feel safe to fully engage.
Because they don’t see themselves in you.
And without that reflection, there is no real connection.
Authenticity in business means allowing space for:
wins and failures
clarity and uncertainty
confidence and vulnerability
Not as a strategy, but as a reality.
Because your audience is not looking for perfection.
They are looking for someone they can relate to.
Authenticity becomes even more important in leadership.
Whether you are leading a team, a community, or a retreat, your ability to be real sets the tone for everyone else.
When leaders hide:
people compete instead of collaborate
communication breaks down
trust erodes
But when leaders are willing to say:
“I don’t know”
“I’m struggling with this”
“I need support”
Something powerful happens.
People step in.
They contribute.
They collaborate.
They take ownership.
Because authenticity creates psychological safety.
And safety is what allows people to show up fully.
This is where authenticity becomes critical for retreat leaders.
Because retreats are not just events.
They are spaces where people come to:
open up
reflect
transform
If you, as the host, are not creating space for the full human experience, your participants won’t either.
If everything feels curated, controlled, or overly polished, people will hold back.
But when authenticity is present, something shifts.
People feel permission to:
be honest
be vulnerable
be themselves
And that is where real transformation happens.
Whether you realize it or not, you are always influencing the people around you.
Through your words.
Through your energy.
Through your presence.
You don’t need a large audience to have influence.
It happens in:
conversations with clients
interactions with your audience
moments inside your retreat
The question is not whether you are influencing.
The question is:
From where are you influencing?
From performance?
Or from truth?
Because one creates pressure.
The other creates connection.
One of the most overlooked benefits of authenticity is freedom.
When you stop trying to manage how you are perceived…
When you stop creating stories to protect yourself…
When you stop performing…
You free up energy.
And that energy can go toward:
your work
your clients
your creativity
your growth
But beyond that, authenticity creates something deeper:
real connection.
And that is what most people are actually looking for.
Not perfection.
Not performance.
Not curated success.
Just something real.
Authenticity is not about sharing everything.
It’s about being honest in what you do share.
Because when you are real:
your message becomes clearer
your energy becomes aligned
your audience becomes stronger
And your retreat stops being something people admire…
And becomes something they feel called to experience.
